Rebuilding Through Giving Back
Among the 668 people who volunteered at HVAF last year, Alan, a proud
Marine veteran, was a regular presence at the Colonel Donald W. Moreau, Sr.
Veterans Community Center, dedicating his time almost every single day.
Since transitioning to civilian life in 1996, Alan has faced immense challenges,
yet his resilience and commitment to giving back to others remain profoundly
inspiring.
After experiencing five years of homelessness, Alan found hope, and in his own words “stable ground.
”
With your support, Alan was safely housed in transitional housing and enrolled in our VetWorks skill-up
program.

"
Alan was housed at our Manchester Apartments and, unfortunately,
on the night of the devasting October 26th fire, he lost everything.
"Today I've only got the same things I first came here with, but
everyone got out and no one got hurt in the fire.
”
Alan, along with the rest of the displaced veterans, were placed in
local hotels immediately following the fire.
Luckily, losing everything while already struggling, didn't slow him
down.
For months following the fire, he took the bus EVERY DAY to volunteer in our food and clothing pantry
serving his fellow veterans.
With you by his side, Alan has graduated from VetWorks, started a new career, and with financial
support from the Fire Assistance Fund, has moved into his own apartment that he can call HOME.
